Rooney to my rescue!

August 2006

LOSA, an aggrandized cultural extravaganza of Southern TN is easily the most awaited event in anyone's school life out in the south. Having been a part of the substitute quiz team, I got my first serious task at PSYNA college in the suburbs of Madurai as the celebrated regular quizzing teams of my school had to focus on studies. My team eventually came second in the tournament and were in the reckoning for LOSA's second team.

LOSA, being a event conducted and financed by TVS school's Alumni on a five lakh budget, the quiz was expected to be a tough nut to crack. Sports quiz qualifier went on smoothly and we cruised to the final. General Quiz prelimns had more than expected questions on sports and entertainment, so we luckily entered the finals. Finished third in General quiz, after enjoying the lead for few incredible moments in the initial part of the quiz.Being a second team from my school, qualifying itself appeared one mega achievement and coming third in it made me feel on top of the world.

I noticed all the variants of girls - cute, hot, dumb, trendy and smart (which was the reason I was there in the first place ;) ), as I walked along the corridors leading to the sports quiz venue after my skit team had bagged the first place in Movie-spoof competition and I was on an all time high. I had one fine final chance to prove my prowess as an accidental yet decent quizzer. The Sports quiz team comprising of me,Ram and Aniruth were perched nearest to the audience, who were sitting behind us in the cozy and cool lab with projector. The quiz organisers(TVS alumni) shook hands with us with a easily noticeable false smile and wished good luck, cursing under their breath, " u gona be bad losers this eve"...

Infinite bounds round of 40 questions.
After 39 questions, the scores stood as follows

The home team(TVS) at 80
My team - 75
The perpetual Mahatma(my school) - TVS rivalry reached new heights after this tight situation. The entire quiz organisers team were TVS alumni and everyone shot cold stares at us.

I forgot I was an atheist for a moment, the rest of the teams were looking at the quiz master, who winked at the TVS team on top of the charts.
Damn, he was from TVS too. It was a direct question to us.
All my sensory organs were so focussed at the quiz master.
Sweat trickled down my neck.. AC? It was on at 21 degree celsius!

" IF he had the citizenship to my country I would love to have him play for my country... Who said this about whom ?"

I blurted out Maradona and errr..err...
Ive come across it somewhere before, somewhere... I slapped myself, hoping it ll turn on my rusty brain and the answer surfaces. Aniruth and Ram sensed my anxiety and asked me to make a wild guess.
Quiz master announced that it wont have any part points.
I know you biased swine.

Everything look blurred to me, time stood still suddenly, I felt myself locked up in some dark room. I couldn't hear any noise around the room and even the smirking rival team already half celebrating their victory noisily. I shook my head vigorously for a moment hoping it comes to my head magically.

The quizmaster's voice loomed spelling doom to us, " ten seconds"
Wait you fuckin idiot
I turned back at the crowd who were right behind us (literally). A guy was stealthily tugging at Aniruth's t-shirt from behind and he shrugged. I lay back and read the words on the back of Aniruth's t-shirt...It read

ROONEY
Time resumed. Light filled the room and the door was thrown wide open.

The quiz master was about to mouth the words 'times up' and I squeaked WAYNE ROOONEY. The whole room fell silent for a second and the rival team stared open mouthed at me.
The quiz master looked shocked in disbelief for a moment and stuttered, " Corr..rrect a.an..an..answer" .

We leapt in joy at our unprecedented hour of glory. I stood up, and involuntarily my middle finger pointed towards the professor who intervened in the general quiz finals, which had cost us the second place.
The august month eve proved to be one of the most august moments in my life, thanks to the stranger who made it possible by stroking my team mate's shirt once.

Bless Aniruth for wearing Rooney's jersey. Bless Body Language apparel shop where he got it. Bless Rooney for being what he is...

Lets talk Business

Brittania, Lays, Centerfresh, Milo - the titans of marketing by giving-away-useless-products-for-free strategy.

All such business tactics are manoeuvred to ascertain no-bargain sales of the product and its target zeroes in on the most profitable age bracket - kids. Human's innate tendency is to grab free stuff. Never mind the cost of the actual product man. You are getting something FREE. Something that you dont deserve to have and consequently never mind losing. No responsibility hovers over the free item. Gets damaged? Nomatter at all, its anyway FREE. You can hand it over to the deprived, be a good philanthropist with a wide stupid grin... Philanthropy at no cost, i.e FREE.

Indians are really good bargainers, probably the best. Ability wise on par with Aussie cricket. Even while buying stuff that is not legally or ethically right, they bargain, asking the seller to be noble (manasatchi) and just to his business. Sounds like be good while doing bad or be fair while doing unfair acts ! And more than often walks away with a substantial bargain, floating in euphoria at his moment of 'glory'.
Bazaars are selling dvds like hot cakes. No longer do they start quoting the price of a DVD at 80 bucks, get bulldozered by bargain and finally settle for 20 bucks. Its point blank Rs.20 everywhere. Save your time. Doing some simple math, 5 div-x quality movies in a single dvd which implies 4 bucks for one movie. Producer's graveyard the bazaar.
A dose of nostalgia... Tuesdays and Saturdays were invariably the power cut days back in the late 90s and the dawn of 21st century in Madurai. 9am - 5 pm was the traditional duration when the city goes un-electrified and I would be at school for the most part of it playing swatkats with my benchmate using scissors and getting punished for being the lone soul submitting assignments a week after the deadline. Saturdays though were rueful in having me nailed at home, with no power and hence no tv,taperecorder and fan, and wondering intelligently why they cant run on batteries. And last summer, I used to start off to the bazaar, spend my time lavishly in each shop and rummaging through the stacks of dvds for nothing!

Let me take you back to 1995 when Britannia gave away freestuff on the basis of point system by collecting wrappers( both yours and those that you steal from the kid next door) and handing it over to the nearest vendor in return for a spin-top like the blades of a miniature helicopter. It was the rage of my school and I fended off any possibility of buying anything thats not Brittania. The big pack of Goodday fetched twice the points of its closest rival and with gleaming pride I used to buy it at the store near my school everyday. The wrapper seemed precious to me than the enclosed eatable ! Wonder why I spent hundreds on biscuits (main constitiuent of my boyhood diet) for a piece of simple plastic toy, easily available in namma oor thiruvizha at infinitesimal cost.

Now get propelled to the end of last millenium. Centerfresh and Big Babol offered cricket trump cards(again plastic!) free with every piece of chewing gum and getting the elite player's cards was reckoned to be the most crucial aspect of any serious collector. I was really lucky to grow up in a hood with atleast two shops selling chewing gum in every street. I gathered news from the Remuki beeda kadai shopkeeper about when his stock of chewing gums will be replenished every week which turned out to be Sundays. So, every sunday, when that middle aged man at the shop goes home for lunch and his dad, an octagenerian stands in, I sneak out of my home through the backyard ( not to alert my fellow card-collector/competitor and yeah also my friend! who lives across the street), buy a dozen gums and ransack the whole set of cards for the exquisite/rare ones and slip two-three cards into my pocket when he turns away for a splitsecond. I leave with a smile.
Mission accomplished !
And I head straight to my rival's home to flaunt about my new addition of cards and give a deep guffaw...

Now, move few more years forward to 2002-03,when Lays bolstered its foothold on the snacks sector with tazos(plastics yet again!). I had an edge over all other competitors when it comes to tazos, the free amusing plaything inside a Lays pack because I got addicted to Lays since I set my eyes upon it. 80% of the days in a year I dint miss out on Lays. If you are lucky enough to get two tazos in a single pack,it will make the next day's top news in school and friends exclaiming in awe and considering you a special blessed one, though cursing you bloody wretched child, under their breath.Tazos along with GIjoes was the ultimate combination of an indoor game and which provided more than a quantum of solace during those days with a powercut and helped me innovate new indoor games based on adventure. Looking at all the junior-school goers playing NFS for hours and Unreal Tournament for days, I can say they are missing something big in their life. Playing indoor/outdoor games with friends (well to all the detractors n those who know me well,I used to be passionate about playing outdoor years ago), helps you both bond well with them and also sharpens your creativity. Even Lays,Centerfresh and Brittania have stopped the practice of giving exciting free gifts, rightly though.

Cricket cards? Google up the name of the cricketer and voila, you get his pic, details and even about his secret affair and the his innerwear brand!
Swinging Tazos? Grow up, think of a kalashinov or a Shotgun!
Times are changing and change is the only thing permanent. But the pleasant niceties of the nineties are too good for me to stop thinking about and get carried away.
And its time I grab a pack of Lays, sadly though, without any tazo(s) in it...

Parottas, Temples and XII C !

Saturday (22nd March) - As I set afoot on my hometown madurai soil, I shuffled my hair in response to the silent breeze in my direction. I was back in Madurai after my longest absence from the city, 82 days and I was exceedingly on a hyper and floating. Its a beautiful city with a flower like architecture and famous not for its Tata Sumos, ruffians and Veecchu Aruvaals (as demonstrated in movies) but for its Temples,Jasmine,Parottas and overwhelming hospitality.

Nothing had changed in the city, I observed, as the autorickshaw cruised through the traffic less yet busy streets of the earlymorning Madurai to my spacious residence in KK.Nagar. With open arms and a gleeful smile, my tata opened the door followed by a warm amiable welcome from the rest of the family. A feeling of unusual comfort crept into me as I stepped into my room, whose walls know me better than any other person or thing. After catching some Z's for a few hours, I woke up to my mobile screamin out Bon Jovi's Have a Nice day...

After buying some novels for my friend and hogging at British Bakery's flagship outlet at Town Hall road, 8-9 fellas visited our school for perhaps the first time after passing out. Desperately wanting to catch a glimpse of my 12 C classroom, I climbed the stairs while million memories of my school days converged in my mind. The 12 C bench, which saw me famously sleeping while standing and providing a solace to me when not being able to withstand lectures...there it was, moved few feet upfront but still bearing the scars of my pathetic artistic engraving and the sheen of having lodged the 12th grade blabbermouth me hasn't faded a bit.

Almost my entire gang thronged at Veeru's place and splurged into loud merriment for almost an hour. Dinner at Carnival followed. More friends to meet the next day and more matters to discuss about. After a long talk with my whole family, I left 647,KK.Nagar at 8.30 pm and started for the railway station. I sat upright on the platform bench, hoping the audio speaker nestled on a towering steel pillar to yell - Nellai Express has met with some problem and is rescheduled to leave the city only the next day. But it never did. The train was bang on time and I lifted my feet off the ground and got into the train.

And I was no longer floating nor on a hyper...

Chronicles of School days - I ... Why blood? Same blood

Mrs.Banu, my XII cse teacher and also my class incharge was teaching some C language crap during december. Me and Ambi were sitting in the last bench with Raj and Muhilan in front of us. Having been warned umpteen times not to talk during class, we were constantly gibbering and gossiping and giggling. And the watchful Mrs.banu ordained us to stand for the rest of the class. Not being able put up with the lecture anymore, I managed to doze off while standing thinking am hidden from her view by Raj.

And to the horror of everyone, I fell aside while sleeping and as a result, ambi was disturbed from his stance clumsily and she noticed it. And due to my special ability to sleep while standing, the whole group got into trouble. She sent us out of the class and dismissed our apologies at the end of the period and also the following day. Finally, on the third day, we went to Commerce class while she was lecturing. She made us wait outside that classroom. Raj and me were talking about Muhilan's goofy act earlier and started laughing meanwhile keeping an eye on the entrance of the class to check whether Mrs.banu is watching us or not. She came out of the class and yelled at us for talking n laughing even while waiting outside her room to apologise.

~~ Uh-hoh, the class had windows ! ~~

She was so furious that she ordered us to meet the principal immediately and more drama was to follow.
We waited outside P's room. And made sure she isn't watching out from tinted windows by calculating the angle from her table. Me and Raj started laughin at ourselves to have messed up things and were cursing fate. Presuming it wont be a big problem convincing our principal, we walked in to find in absolute horror, a huge mirror in the room and a scorning principal.

We could see in the mirror, the place where we had been standing and laughing outside her room moments ago.

And you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to know what happened next !

Why blood ? Same blood ;)

When the God of luck smiles on you...

After speaking to the daughter (12th grader) of my dad's close friend, my mind was clouded with thoughts that have been shrouded…

Had luck and fortune not been my allies in my 12th grade, I would’ve ended up in the same college, but as a candidate taking up an unworthy undeserving reserved seat. Phew, those torturous moments when my school principal loathed me in front of everyone ( not that I cared) and deeming a group of elite students as the strong prospects of getting the maximum marks, and terming me as a headstrong talent-wasting taking-advantage-of-parents-absence guy. Sweet revenge. And revenge becomes more sweet when you don’t have an idea of taking revenge but end up having taken a glorious revenge. I wasnt even studying as a normal person will do normally.

And I used to curse those role models that I was asked to look upto in order to succeed. The first three months of 12th grade probably set atone a thumping year, but it never materialized. I know there would’ve been myriad raised eyebrows and unbelieving gasps from people who were close to me and who knew my preparation all along when I announced my new marks, bigger after revaluation. Just try telling them subadesh deserved the marks that he got finally, and you will leave with bruised eyes or a swarm of expletives. And for the greater part of people who will never accept anything written above, I don’t give a fish.

Me, S.Gowtham and lot others were discussing nothing more than the capitation fees in various colleges till the public exams. The most nightmarish situation (I pray no one should get into) that I got into but recovered finally was that on the day before chemistry exam, at 10.00 PM, i had 400 more pages to go in organic chemistry ( that carbon crap) . The value of cut off marks in 12th is largely under weighed and consequently, it is not bothered about by teachers and students alike. And those smart, prudent students who revere only cutoff marks will finish off the exams as a piece of cake. And those unfortunate chaps who are narrow minded to take into account only the total marks and the parallel praises that he ll get from his school and relatives will have to choke and finally get into an average college ( anyway we ll end up in the same IT company eventually, but that’s a different thing) !

And yeah, resuming what I actually intended to say…

She said she had been told stories about me being a hardworking brainy fellow and also that

she has to look upto role models like me in order to succeed and obviously she would’ve cursed me.

See … History repeats…!

Haunting Dreams....

Before joining college, i wasnt just Building castles in the air, but created a whole kingdom( of course ruled by me!)...
Thanks to our Kollywood's College movies....

Talking about dreams...Here We GOOOOOOO!!

In the exciting colorful college phase of my life, I (with some cool hairstyle and sporting coolers...on the lines of SRK in KKHH, and i go around the college by skateboards! ) get down from my bike( not some bullet vandi as in sachein) and wave at the onlookers (stunned..acc to me) who gaze at me as if Superman had arrived. Seniors try to make me stumble by sticking their legs on my way, but I manage to strike a balance with my single foot on the ground and hit them with some gravity-defying stunts...
[ opening song]

Within a few days, I form a gang along with three other blokes (with one comedian of course! ) in my class, and from then on, we never attend lectures. We while away time by sitting on compound walls with parked bikes nearby ( engalodathu nu sonnena?) , and talking about unproductive stuff. When some good-looking lassie goes past us, I call her up, and we have her lunch - thari sadham and maanga pickles (as too many brahmins in my coll), and shoo her away with a loud 'burp'... When I get into trouble my gang vanishes into thin air but whereas when i get to kadalapottufy with some gal, they behave contrastingly and stick with me ( they must see some Kathir's movie ).

After a few days, when am at the temple ( not for pious reasons....you know why ;) ), I meet my 'THE ONE" through a head on collision trying to rescue a lit-lamp from being extinguished (with thakkuchuku thakujum bg music from Kushi ) and its that four letter thing at first sight. The next day I cant eat or sleep well and when complaining about it to my gangmates, villain of the story (or maybe hero...coz #005 villain's villain is a hero! ) gets into a fight with me as he had abused some classmate of mine. I biff him with clenched fists, execute some WWE moves ( graphics integerated coz i cant do risky stunts by being hooked to suspended ropes ) and then at my final punch, he lands at the girl's foot and apologises...And all this happens in the middle of a large ensemblage of spectators including the professors. And when the college's top officials arrive at the battlefield ( obviously after everythings over ), the crowd dissolves amidst blatant cacophony and when am about to leave, I set my eyes upon the same girl (ya, she turns out to be my college mate) I met at the temple and get aquainted with her...
[ second song...a duet at som exotic foreign location]

As showcased in every film, classes never seem to happen, and even on those rare occasions when it does, I turn a hooligan and hoot n boo( as my classies giggle) n make a mockery of the professors. When some professor retorts, I stage a walkout and we waltz around and perform some jig in the college (i can even play guitar) and indulge in every form of unfruitful merriment...

And also, I goto some new flicks everyweekend with my gang, turn a roamer in the beach, dance at DJ clubs, hog at NV hotels, stay online in the evenings, some midnight calls ;) - a typical happy-go-lucky wastrel, but still turn out to be the college topper, soccer star, amazing dancer!
I am named the captain of the college football team and am the lead dancer in my college troop( which again comprises my gang and also my "THE ONE" ) .

And during the much frenzied College Chairman elections, posters of me are ubiquitous. Everyone's unanimous choice is me but still eventually, i beat my opponent by just 'one vote', after an announcement over the cobweb filled college speakers to a large gathering of students...
[ third song...ghana genre]

And during the ultra-hyped up culturals and sports event at our rival college (where rivalry is handed down from batch to batch), at the dance and music competition grand finale, our lead singer "the ONE" forgets the lines of the song and our rival college perform the same song (practice illamaa vera!) that we were supposed to do and eventually win it. So I part ways with "THE ONE"....[ sogams music segment]

In the semi-finals of football tournament, our team loses despite a hatrick from me. But we get into the finals ( ghilli padam paarthathilla? ) somehow. So, in order to win the overall culturals shield, our team has to win the soccer final match. With just one minute to go, our team is deadlocked with the opponent team (who turned out to be that rival college). I decide to take the bull by its horns and i dribble past the stunned midfielders with the touch of magic, sprint past defenders by three stepovers and send a scorcher of a shot which rockets past the beaten goalkeeper and hits the back of the net and the huge crowd cheers my team and chants my name!! Victory for my team ...[ fifth song...at the ground where 'the one' dances too]

While returning back to college, my friends try to pacify me and finally succeed in rejoining me and my "the oNE" ( nalla ennam ellam kidayathu...appo thaan I wont go behind their 'aal' )
With me being the head of some ****** student organisation, I work on some differential corrosion nanotechnology based cmos fabrication method using strings through waveoptics.
[ dideernu...kutthu song...uncalled for though]

When my paper is all set to be chosen for the presentation, my rival ( the guy i beat up earlier) decides to take pay me back by abducting my "THE ONE", and demanding me to back out from the presentation to allow his paper to be selected. On hearing this, I get to his place ( epadi edam theriumnu kekka koodathu), which turns out to be a a dimly-lit warehouse on top of a hill. After some astounding fight sequences, I rescue her and get to the presentation hall on time.
I receive an award for the my paper and I live happily ever after....a fairy tale ending...Yup this will remain a tale forever...

What happened in reality...i'll post that after four years... Cant let the cat out of the bag so soon ;)

WRECKER IN CHIEF !!!!
Chinni Jeyanth...Starred in over 200 movies as a college student
And the guy who is responsible for my dreams and the consequent disappointment...

At Boredom....Avada Kedavra!

10 pm …. Power cut ; all i can hear is some frogs croaking and the fan above me squeaking ; TV cable connection malfunctioning ; done with The Week and India today ; I-pod out of charge ; A pair of fresh eyes nowhere near the horizon of sleepiness ; mobile balance miserably low ; UPS good enough for a fan and a light ; have loads of HW to do...but am a stereotypical procrastinating student as shown in movies (those movies with Chinni Jeyanthi as a college student, who hasn’t graduated for two decades !); Nothing to dream of (am more of a diurnal dreamer, relishing reveries in classes) ; A newly formatted laptop, with no amusing game (other than pinball or solitaire….which my first grader cousin considers childish !), no gripping e-books to waste time on ; so ultimately I decide to write a journal of my vacation days after 12th grade.Let me kick off by penning one such day’s ‘note worthy’ happenings as an arsenal to my imposing enemy boredom…

Before that, the sharp definition of a Journal - A daily written record of (usually personal) ‘significant’ experiences….

My journal pages

I woke up at about 10.30, unable to perpetuate my sleep any further than 10 hours. The next significant thing that I did was

Errrrrrrrrrr….

Had nice fresh spicy and sexy prawns for lunch…

Errrrrrrrrr…..

5.30 in the evening

Errrrrrrrrr…..

Dinner time – Roti and paneer

Errrrrrrrrrr….

Present - Sorry for those non-lexical errrrrr s…But significant stuff only should be jotted down in a journal…am thinking hard for such events....I swear the day next to this ll turn out to be eventful..

The next day –
My journal pages

Errrrrrrr…
